The Daily Fantasy Sports industry has gone totally crazy for the NFL. If last week taught us that the big sites would go to extreme lengths to secure your custom, then NFL week two suggests that some sites are prepared to slow down - and some are upping the stakes even more.
Week Two was all about the differing approaches of DraftKings and FanDuel. It's making for a fascinating heavyweight bout as the big two battle for DFS marketshare supremacy.
While DraftKings posted up another HUGE week of overlay, FanDuel tightened its belt and elected to change tack after the excesses of NFL Week One. In total, DraftKings offered just over $1.5m of NFL overlay on Sunday 20th September alone. FanDuel, at $107k, had a mere fraction of the DraftKings total, suggesting a clear divide in marketing strategies between the two big guns. DraftKings is all-in on huge guarantees; FanDuel is keeping its cards close to its chest.
Interestingly, Yahoo had more NFL overlay than FanDuel on Sunday. With around $220k of free money on offer (more than double that of FanDuel), it is clear that the internet giant is targeting the coveted number three slot. And who knows? If Yahoo maintains its aggressive strategy in an attempt to convert its monstrous database of Season-Long Fantasy players, then it might just set its sights on the top two.
Last week, we brought you an interview with Draftpot CEO Joey Levy, who made it clear that overlay is a big part of Draftpot's marketing strategy. True to Joey's word, Draftpot posted up around $80k in overlay on Sunday. That means that Draftpot had around double the overlay on offer from the much-hyped StarsDraft (an offshoot of online poker market-leader PokerStars), which makes Draftpot's intentions crystal clear. It is a site that has adopted a bullish strategy, and we at SuperLobby are eager to see whether it chooses to sustain its overlay offensive.
